July 23, 2008: N2Y, Inc.® has officially launched the Unique Learning System curriculum product to the public. Educators now have access to the most comprehensive standards-based Special Education curriculum ever to hit the market. This is not a modified curriculum, but one built from National standards that are customized by individual states to easily align with their state- specific standards.
The Unique Learning System is based on years of classroom experience, teacher input and study of effective learning strategies for students with the most significant disabilities. The Unique Learning System curriculum is the ONLY product of its kind created from the ground up specifically for special learners. This approach is much different than what is currently available on the market. The curriculum is divided into four age-appropriate levels. Each level can be purchased individually. Collectively, the levels cover all students between K-12 at all ability levels. Currently there is a three year publishing cycle that will guarantee brand new material for the next 36 months. Not only is the information new but it interweaves directly with the News-2-You newspaper, allowing educators to supplement and reinforce the lessons in the curriculum with current event's news. The symbol set utilized throughout the curriculum is N2Y’s SymbolStix, creating consistency across all our product lines.

The Unique Learning System is the brain child of Kathy Staugler. During her 35 years in education, Kathy has worked as a speech language pathologist, special education classroom teacher and assistive technology consultant. Her interest in curriculum for special learners peaked when training Ohio teachers about the Alternate Assessment process. While teachers became more aware of what standards-based instruction needed to look like, they did not have the time to create the extensive modified materials that were necessary for their classrooms of varied learners. At a conference in 2006, Kathy and N2Y’s founder Jacquie Clark began a discussion on how the current events format of News-2-You could be enhanced by including a core curriculum that progressed throughout the grades. The result of this discussion—the Unique Learning System—is a comprehensive standards-based curriculum formatted to support literacy and content learning for students with significant needs.
